Hi, I’m Sebastiaan den Hertog, a Computer Science student specializing in Technical Informatics. I’m originally from the Netherlands and currently living in New Zealand, where I’m continuing to develop my skills and looking for opportunities to gain more professional experience within the technology industry.

My main interests are software engineering, embedded systems, IoT, robotics, networking, and applied artificial intelligence. I especially enjoy projects where hardware and software come together. Whether I’m programming a microcontroller, developing a backend system, designing a web application, or configuring a Linux server, I like understanding how every part of a system works and how those parts can be improved.

Over the years, I have worked with technologies including C, C++, Java, Python, JavaScript, TypeScript, Spring, Flask, Vue.js, React, Docker, Linux, SQL databases, microcontrollers, and different networking protocols. My personal projects have included embedded controllers, LED and lighting systems, home automation, machine-learning applications, server infrastructure, web platforms, and Minecraft plugins. These projects have taught me how to troubleshoot complex problems, work independently, research unfamiliar technologies, and continue improving a solution until it works reliably.

Alongside my studies, I worked at Soellaart, an outdoor and travel store in Haarlem. I initially worked in sales, where I helped customers choose products for travel, outdoor activities, and everyday use. This taught me how to listen carefully, understand what someone needs, and explain technical product information clearly. I later worked on internal software projects as a full-stack developer, including product-information and data-import tools. This gave me experience developing software for real business processes and working with users who depend on the systems I build.

Outside programming, I enjoy running, cycling, and endurance sports. I have completed a marathon and am now working towards the larger challenge of completing an Iron Man. Training for endurance events has taught me discipline, consistency, patience, and the importance of working towards long-term goals. I also enjoy experimenting with electronics, managing my home servers, working on home-automation projects, and exploring new tools and technologies.

I’m naturally curious and enjoy learning by building things. I’m not afraid of challenging problems or unfamiliar systems, and I’m always interested in understanding why something works rather than simply accepting that it does. My goal is to continue developing as an engineer while creating practical technology that solves real problems and has a meaningful impact.
